Anonymous Complaints aka When Our Government Empowers Whiners

Depending on the business that you are in, at some point in your career you may hear from your employer, “we’ve had an anonymous complaint”. Chances are your employer heard from a State or County government agency, who in turn is “processing” an anonymous complaint. Let’s think about this for a moment. What comes to mind when you envision an anonymous complainer sitting down to write a letter, or picking up the phone, to specifically unleash a government agency on an unsuspecting, taxpaying business or individual. To be willing to do that, take that action, only on the condition that their name not be disclosed brings to mind certain types of individuals:

  1. a competitor envious of another’s success
  2. a neighbor envious of another’s lifestyle
  3. a whining, sniveling coward that knows what they are doing is unfair
  4. a whining sniveling coward that hasn’t the courage to call the other directly
  5. a whining, sniveling coward that knows they would be admonished, banished as a pariah within their industry, neighborhood, or social strata should it EVER be known what they have done.

If other definitions/visions come to mind, please feel free to add them as a comment following this post.

Generally speaking, I think these five definitions would be universally acceptable characterizations of those born of cowardice and are thus inclined to cowardly acts. However, let me clearly state that there are special circumstances wherein an accuser’s name should remain anonymous e.g., reporting domestic violence or felonious activities wherein one may be justifiably fearful of physical reprisal from the accused. But I think we can agree that this is NOT what we’re discussing here today. No, this is about a spineless tool that thinks they have the RIGHT, because our government tells them so, to wreak undue havoc on another without disclosing their identity.

When did government decide this was ok? I know it happened quite a lot during the Nazi Germany era. Then there was our own “McCarthy Era”. Now that was something to be proud of, wasn’t it? Why is it that vestiges of such practices endure to this day. Why is it that our government will indulge the rantings of an anonymous chicken when no one else with a brain would do so? Is this some incantation of helping the little people? Or is it the little people that answer the phone at a government agency that are instantly empathetic with those that are as little and stupid as they are. If it were me answering the call for a government agency I might say, “if you are unwilling to provide your identity, then your claim is not credible. Grow up you lilly-livered weakling, call the offending party yourself and work it out.”

But noooooooooooooooo. There will be demand letters sent to everyone involved and some who are not. Explanations and written responses will be required within a finite timeline. Once they have all this information they’ll think it over awhile and may or may not let you know what’s been decided. But be damned sure the engines of commerce WILL STOP until the government agency gets their answers regarding the complaint remitted by somebody most of society would consider plant food, if simply for the fact that they won’t supply their name.

In most instances of law where there is a difference of opinion isn’t there a recurring prominent phrase that goes something like: FACE YOUR ACCUSER?

Thanks to the Nazi/McCarthy flavored empowerment of government AGENCIES, they welcome accusers of all flavors, even those that literally don’t exist…….because……they…….don’t……have………. a name. So why would I believe that there was an anonymous complaint to begin with? What’s to stop any government agency from invoking fake complaints. Maybe things were running too smoothly at a government office and there’s talk of layoffs. Better get busy and stir up some trouble. It’s the best job security there is.

Oh, and yes, please find attached the “complaint” from the department of licensing received by my broker today. Enjoy. It’s your tax dollars at work. DOL Website Complaint
